Creating safe spaces for pets during NYE celebrations.

From fireworks to loud parties and people partying in the streets, the sounds can be a bit overwhelming for our four-legged family members. Amy Gravel, communications and outreach specialist at the Best Friends Animal Society, joined the show with tips on creating safe spaces for pets during new year celebrations.</div>

New Year's Eve celebration is gonna be so much fun for everyone, including our pets here with some advice about ringing in the New Year with our pets in mind is Amy Gravel from Best Friends Animal Society and of course you brought a friend. Welcome, Amy. Tell us about our friend here. Thank you. Yes, this is Cersei. Um, the real star. She is actually behaving herself so nicely right now. Um, she's five months old. She's looking for a home, a little bit of a husky mix you can see in the blue eyes there. So, yeah, I mean, what more is there? And she is a people's dog. She has kissed all of us. She's let her pet her snuggle with her. Yeah, and we know July 4th is the biggest day for fireworks, but a lot of people do, you know, use fireworks for New Year's Eve. So any advice for pets when it comes to fireworks? Yeah. Um, I mean, a lot of pets are nervous, especially the, you have a new pet and you're not sure how they're gonna react. Maybe just making a nice safe space for them quiet room, maybe your bedroom you can dim the lights, you can put on some classical music, a fan. Um, just anything to keep them calm. Uh Yeah, that's always what we recommend. Um, let's say people are entertaining. You keep the, the dog, the cat in a separate room. Um, it depends on how many people are gonna be there and how, you know, they react to humans. She clearly loves people. She wants to clear on people, but um, you know, they get overstimulated sometimes. So giving them a space where they can relax and be themselves is always a good option. Um, yeah, so when you're partying, you know, there's food, there's drinks, anything we should keep away from our pets. Um, I did see you talking about the grape traditions are not for dogs that toxic. Um, so definitely no grapes. Um, I mean most people food shouldn't be for pets. Um, you know, they like some like bell peppers or a banana every once in a while for a dog. But most of all I would keep most of the people food away from dogs. How good she is being. So, what about those people? You know, me, for example, I'm gonna keep it low key. I wanna hang out with my family. I wanna hang out with my dog and my cat. What activities can you do with your pets? New Year's Eve? Um, you know, depending on the weather, it could be cold and there could be fireworks going on. So I would recommend keeping, keeping them inside doing a Chill New Year's Eve, maybe watching movie with them. Um, especially her. She would just chill on the couch. Well, I wanna ask you about lighting as well, but I have to say for Cersei, there's so much lighting in the studio and this is not bothering her at all. But what about lighting? Yeah, I mean, she's clearly not bothered. Um, you know, uh, lighting doesn't tend to bother most pets. Um, they have a different eyesight than us. But, um, you know, it, it depends, it's nice to get a vibe from your pet and see how they feel. Um, she's clearly pretty, like, calm right now. She likes to make these sounds husky. She's so sweet. Any other New Year's Eve pet safety tips we should know about. Um, chocolate obviously is a big one. Keep the chocolate away from them. Even if you think it's wrapped up in a box, they can get to it and they will, especially these kinds of dogs and if people want to avoid, uh, adopt Cersei, what can they do? How do they do it? They can go to our center in Soho. We're at 307, West Broadway, Best Friends Animal Society. They can go to Best friends. Uh, New york.org. What's your background? You were telling me a little bit off camera. Yeah, she came from one of our partner shelters. Um, that was overcrowded. And, uh, we actually don't know more before that. She's only five months so she's pretty young. Um, she's just a baby. She is a baby. She acts like a puppy. How much bigger is she expected to get. Um, we're not sure, you know, it's hard to tell with a mixed breed. She's pretty grown into her paws, we'd say maybe about £40 total. And she loves the camera. I mean, she, she's also very beautiful. She was watching, she was watching you guys on screen earlier in the, in the green room, so she loves the news. Well, hopefully New Year's Eve, she will have a home and not be spending it. And, um, tell me about, you know, your shelter. Are there a lot of animals that are up for adoption dogs? Cats, what's the need right now? Yeah, we're pretty full right now. We have dogs and cats. Um, I mean, she's available, obviously we're doing a $25 adoption, um, promo through the end of the year. So all these pets can go home before 2024. All right.
